Philadelphia Might Be Alright Now

Way back on July 3 of this year, members of the white nationalist group, Patriot Front marched through downtown Philadelphia. They were chased out. I am thrilled this happened. Finally. Everyone who considers themselves to be anti-racist needs to chase white nationalists out of town.

Having said that, we should acknowledge that Philadelphia has a terrible history of being an unjust town for its majority black population. You can’t get in line at Geno’s without seeing a message that black people are cop killing animals (and, I presume, that Italian-Americans are good, wholesome, superior people). Philadelphia and my New York both have the distinction of responding to the crime wave of the 70s and 80s by electing a white supremacist Italian American mayor, who was a disaster for the city and a menace to black residents.
